  • Notes
    • KITCHENER Fifteen years ago, Bill Luft turned on his family, killing his wife, four young children and himself.

The killings on July 6, 2000, in a home on Mooregate Crescent in Kitchener, still stand as Waterloo Region's worst mass murder.

An 11-day inquest in 2001 concluded nothing could have prevented the murders. They took place while Luft's parents were inside their temporary home, a motorhome parked in the driveway. They heard nothing.

Luft, who was 42, had bipolar disorder marked by extreme shifts in mood but often refused to take his medication, partly due to the stigma about mental illness.

Luft was also under an extreme amount of stress. He was unemployed, in debt and trying to come to terms with his 10-week-old son being diagnosed with spina bifida....
