  • Notes
    • The remains of George Witzel arrived in Ionia on noon train today, and were taken at once to the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Valentine Witzel, on Welton street, from whence the funeral was attended at 2:30 this afternoon, burial being in Highland Park.

Deceased was born in Canada, and was 33 years old at time of death. He was in Ionia at intervals, but most of the last 16 years was spent away from home. The first 6 years of this time was spent in Dakota; he went thence to Detroit and worked 2 years for the Grand Trunk; he moved then to Chicago, remaining still in the employ of the Grand Trunk, but transferred later to the Santa Fe. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen, in which he carried $1200; and also carried a certificate for $1000 in the Maccabees, all of which run to his mother; he was unmarried. The remains were accompanied from Chicago by his brother John and wife, and Messrs. Gordan and Brody, representatives of the B.of R.T.

The bearers were his six brothers as follows: Henry, Peter, Godlup and Fred of Ionia; Alfred of Detroit; and Will of Lansing.

Mrs. Lane arrived this afternoon from St. Joseph, to attend the funeral of her brother, Geo. Witzel.

The Chicago Times-Herald has the following annoucement of the death of George Witzel: "The body of George Witzel was found lying face downward in a small pool of water on West 46th street and Kedzie Avenue early yesterday morning. An investigation proved Witzel met his death accidentally. He was a switchman employed by the Santa Fe railway. The tracks run near the ditch where the body was found, and it is thought he missed his footing and fell from the top of a freight car. A coroner's jury held an inquest and returned a verdict of accidental death. Witzel lived at 38th street and Kedzie Avenue."
