- Kalbfleisch Family
By Anna Pearl Murray
John Kalbfleisch left Bieben, Germany when 16 years of age with two friends about 14 years old. This was a great decision to break family ties and sail to a vast and unknown land. John's father told them not to look back or they would get homesick and give up leaving.
John's sister of New Dundee, Ontario, Canada, was to meet them in New York harbor. There was some misunderstanding and she wasn't there, but they found a German speaking man who befriended them for the time.
Later in life John married Salome Poth from New Dundee and eventually brought two children to Deanville area and established a home there. While in New Dundee, John rode a "bone shaker" to Chicago. If John was a wagon maker by trade, he might have been more comfortable taking a team and wagon. In 1883, George came to visit brother John. They had not seen one another for many years and were not sure of themselves. John asked many questions of the family in Germany and finally George said: "You are really my brother, John." Indeed, what a reunion.
John and Salome raised four children in Deanville area who have families living here today. George settled in this area and raised four daughters, he carried mail from Brown City post office for many years.
Meno married Belva McNary and settled in Burnside Township on Cade Road. They had one daughter, Eileen, and two sons, Elmer and George. Eileen removed herself and two sons and one daughter to Florida.
Elmer and Norma (Salisbury) had five children. Norma lives in Detroit and the four remaining chil- dren live in the Brown City area and are carrying on the family name with another generation growing up in their homes and attending our schools.
George and Emily (Lepa) have four girls and three boys. All but two are married and living around the Brown City vicinity. One girl and one boy are still on the home scene. Brown City has been richer because three young boys struck out alone for the United States in the mid-1800's.
