Notes |
- William Barbour, a local farmer, was Captain of the Crosshill Infantry Company from 1866 to 1871. As shown in the 1881 Illustrated Atlas, Barbour's farm occupied a large lot immediately north of the village, fronting on the present Road 5 (William Hastings Line), and flanked on the east by Road 7 (Hutchison Road).
We also know from the 1864 Gazetteer (p. 116) that Barbour was a leader of the local Temperance Union.

"The militiamen of Waterloo in those days were big men in every way. Capt. Barbour, of the Crosshill Company, was over 6 feet 5 inches, and his right hand man stood over 6 feet 6 inches, while the Bugle-Major, Geo. Oakley, at one time a gunner in the Royal Artillery, was so stout that it was said he had to have a rifle sling sewn to his belt to encompass his aldermanic breadbasket."
