- Pioneer Farms - The R. Lavery Farm
In 1847 Meredith Lavery with his wife Kathrine Burke, came from Ireland and took up a portion of Crown Land on the farm now owned by M. Brenner, Con. 14 Wellesley township, Waterloo Co. He stayed there two years and then moved a few farms west and about ¾ miles from Dorking in Apr 1849, just 100 years ago. His grandson Ralph Lavery resides on the same farm. Merdith Lavery was at one time offered the farm now owned by John Kraemer for 100 lbs. of flour, but flour had to be carried on the shoulder from Waterloo over twenty miles distant, and over a blazed trail through the bush, a feat which Mr. Lavery did whenever flour was needed. He considered it too high a price to pay for a farm.
He built a shack for his oldest son Jack, on the farm now owned by James Beatty, but the son did not go there to live, he became a blacksmith. Mr. Lavery's first team of oxen was paid off with maple sugar which his wife made.
He was the first settler west of Tabberts corner. Wolves were plentiful and a torch had to be carried after dark if anyone ventured outside. The children alone one night, huddled around the fireplace in fear, because the wolves were howling outside. The log-house stood near the road on the west half of the present farm. Mr. Lavery sold his east fifty acres to Mr. Eastrip who build a log house farther back from the road, near where their present buildings now stand and Mr. Lavery's son, Meredith bought back the fifty acres when he took over his father's farm and lived in the log house.
In 1894 he moved the barn near the road back beside his own, forming a good bank barn. In 1901 he built the present brick house as it stands to-day with the exception of re-modelled verandahs in 1946, by the present owned who came into possession in 1917.
Plans are being made for a Lavery reunion this summer 1949 to celebrate 100 years possession by the Lavery family.
It is the only farm in the community still owned by the same family as that , which took it out from crown lands.
