      ____________

Mabel Krug, arts and volunteer leader, dies

Mabel Lane Krug of 293 Union Blvd., Kitchener, a community leader in support of art, music and theatre and a long-time worker for the Canadian Cancer Society, died Wednesday of career at her home. She was 82.

Known as the "champion of volunteers", she received recognition at many levels for her cultural contributions and her leadership in the Canadian Cancer Society, capped in 1972 by being named to the Order of Canada.

A volunteer in numerous areas for more than 60 years, Mrs. Krug first became interested in the cancer society in 1949 and had served at local county, provincial and national levels. She was on the national board for five years and was vice-president of the Ontario division.

She was president of District 9 of the division, which included the Waterloo Region, Wellington, Perth, Grey and Huron counties and the Bruce Peninsula.

In 1976, she was named an honorary life member of the society.

She once said during an interview that her most rewarding satisfaction came from working with the cancer society where she could see the results of comforting and encouraging patients.

On Nov. 1, 1981, she received an honorary doctor of laws degree from Wilfrid Laurier University of which she was a governor for six years.
The honor was for her numerous contributions to the community.

Speaking to 400 graduates, Mrs. Krug outlined her philosophy on volunteering. "When you offer to serve a voluntary organization, you demonstrate your sense of caring, your concern for your community, your neighbor and yourself.

"Every activity that I have undertaken has taught me something new," she told the graduates. "I have never ceased to learn. I have made lifelong friendships that I treasure," she said of her many years of volunteer work.

Her secret of being able to do so much was scheduled planning. She once said that was the only way she could get everything done.

To mark her 80th birthday in January 1982, her son and two daughters and their families arranged a gala black-tie cocktail and dinner party at Kitchener's Valhalla Inn. More than 300 friends were on hand to wish her a happy birthday including former Ontario lieutenant-governor
      Pauline McGibbon.

In a surprise presentation, Mrs. Krug was given the Hamilton Diocesan Medal of Honor by Auxiliary Bishop James MacDonald for her outstanding contribution in assistance to former bishop Joseph Ryan, to the Carmelite Monastery at St. Agatha, St. Mary's Hospital and to the parishes in which she has lived. The medal had been awarded to only 27 people.

Born in Bristol, Pa., Mrs. Krug moved to Montreal as a child, attended Stanstead College, Stanstead, Que., and studied music at McGill University. She left a promising operatic singing career in Montreal, New York and Philadelphia to come to Kitchener in 1924 as the bride of
Industrialist Henry Krug. He died in 1965.

In 1945, Mrs. Krug and a small group of volunteers assumed sponsorship of the newly formed K-W Symphony Orchestra, and established an association and a women's committee. The first chairman of the women's committee, Mrs. Krug was a life director.

She had been a member of the Metropolitan Opera Guild since it was formed in the late 1930s.

One thing that gave her a great sense of satisfaction and accomplishment was the building of Kitchener's Centre in the Square. She recalled in a 1981 interview that it be came painfully obvious in 1963 during the week-long Dominion Drama Festival finals in the Twin Cities that the community needed a proper concert-theatre hall. "It took more than 18 years of meetings and struggles, disappointments, and finally triumph when the centre was opened by Lt. Gov. John Black Aird on Sept. 27, 1980.

And in 1955, she was chosen woman of the year by the K-W Quota Club and in 1964 the K-W Jaycees named her Citizen of the Year.

In 1971, she became the first local citizen to receive the City of Kitchener Medallion.

In the fall of 1983, she received a special Oktoberfest Woman of the Mrs. Krug's other activities and accomplishments included being an original member of the Guild for Ballet and Opera in the Twin Cities; a member of the executive comittee of the K-W Art Gallery Association and member of the planning committee for the Kitchener's Centre in the Square.

Mrs. Krug was a member of St. Francis RC Church in Kitchener.

She is survived by one son, Hartman of Kitchener, and two daughters, Carol Boehmer of Kitchener and Audrey King of San Francisco. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by one son, Joseph, and a sister, Irma.

Prayers will be said at the Ratz- Bechtel Funeral Home in Kitchener on Friday at 8 p.m.

Prayers will also be said at the funeral home at 10:30 am. Saturday before the funeral mass at St. Francis Church at 11 a.m.
