    • A. Wilken dies at age of 98

Amsey J. Wilken, one of Listowel's most active and popular senior citizens, died in Listowel Memorial Hospital on Sept. 11, at the age of 98. Known for his sense of humor and his love of horses, he retired some years ago from farming and trades as a painter and paper hanger. One of nine children of John and Annie (Metz) Wilken, he was born in Elmira on August 27, 1886 and raised in nearby Floradale. As a boy he worked long, hard hours after terminating his official education in a one room school. Between stints as a farm worker, he learned carpentry from his father, often putting in a 16-hour day. Later, he acquired his own farm on the fourth concession of Wallace Township and was there for 35 years. He moved to Listowel several years ago. Mr. Wilken was predeceased by his wife, Amanda (Miller) whom he married on New Year's Day, 1920. The ceremony was held at Wallaceville. He was a member of Calvary United Church, Listowel Surviving are three sons, Floyd of Listowel, Carl of Atwood and Jack of Gowanstown; a daughter Mrs. James (Jean) Scott of Listowel; a sister, Mrs. Cora Pontin of Waterloo and a brother, Ralph, of Listowel, 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Mr. Wilken was predeceased by a son Earl; four brothers, two sisters and a grandson. The funeral service with Rev. Cecil Wittich officiating was held at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14 at the Robert Trench Funeral Home, Listowel. Interment was in Fairview Cemetery. The pallbearers were Carl Allendorf, Neil Williams, Bill Williams, Merd Livingston, Jim Scott and Harvey Parker. Flower bearers were Bob Scott, Bruce Wilken, Sharon Horne and Carole Wilken.

      ________________

Situated four miles east of Highway 23 on Concessions 8 and 9 of Wallace and Maryborough Townships, Trecastle had a lot more to recommend it than just the local bootleggers. The hamlet ... was established around the late 1850s. Amsey Wilken has memories of Trecastle being the first place he ever bought smoking tobacco. Although he wasn't a native of Trecastle he spent many a good time there while visiting his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Metz. His mother was the former Annie Metz who married John R. Wilekn and moved to the Elmira area.
