- ALEXANDER SPOTTISWOODE (deceased) was a resident of South Dumfries Township at the time of his death, which occurred November 4, 1876. He was a native of Stirlingshire, Scotland, where he was born March 17, 1817, and emigrated to Canada about the year 1832, settling first at Windsor, Ont, where he remained two years. He then moved to Ambertsburgh, Essex County, and losing his health there, returned to Scotland for a short visit. Again arriving in the land of his adoption, he tried his fortune in the Town of Brantford, engaging in business for a few years with a Mr. Roy. In course of time Mr. Spottiswoode entered into the general store business in the Town of Paris, and went into the manufacture of plaster of Paris. He was for a number of years one of the largest business men in Paris, and in 1857 he moved into South Dumfries, where he remained till his death. Mr. and Mrs. Spottiswoode were married January 7, 1847. She was a Miss Catharine Latshaw, born in Waterloo Village, Out., March 25, 1822, and is a member of the Baptist Church. Mr. Spottiswoode, who was educated in Scotland, took an active part during life in the politics of the country, ranking himself as a firm supporter of the Reform party. He held the office of Justice of the Peace, and was a most useful member of the community in which he lived. To Mr. and Mrs. Spottiswoode were born six children, of whom five are now living-Joseph A., Clara L., Samuel R., Hattie and Isabella B. Mary R., who was born July 1, 1851, died July 9, 1879 ; she received her education at Hamilton, State of New York.
