    • ADAM C. SMITH, farmer, Township of South Dumfries, was born in Brant County, 12th April, 1837. His father, James Y., was a native of New Hampshire, where he was born 16th February, 1790, and died 22nd February, 1867, and his mother, Mary (Clemons), was born 23rd March, 1797, and died 25th November, 1877. They were mairied in New York State, 24th March, 1816, and emigrated to Canada about the year 1825, settling in the County of Waterloo, Ontario, where they remained for about fifteen years, when they moved into Brant County, which they made their final home in Canada. Mr. James Y. Smith was a carder by trade, but commenced agricultural pursuits after settling in Brant County. Adam C, our subject, married, 8th February, 1869, Mary Sullivan, who was born in Toronto in 1850. She is a daughter of John and Mary Sullivan. To Mr. and Mrs. Smith, who are members of the Canada Methodist Church, have been bora three children\emdash Mary A., bom 18th November, 1870 ; Elvira M , born 20th July, 1872 ; and William S., born 18th March, 1874. Mr. Smith has been engaged in farming all his life, and is now residing with his family on the old home farm, consisting of 180 acres, situated two and a half miles from Paris, in the Township of South Dumfries, and has been very successful in bis vocation.
