- Stanley J. Searles Meets Instant Death When Car Crashes Tree
By Record Correspondent
WALKERTON, Aug. 4.-A Kitchener man was in- stantly killed late yesterday afternoon and his friend seriously injured when the car the former was driving went out of control on the Walkerton-Paisley highway and struck a tree.
The dead man is Stanley J. Searles 23, of 44 Mansion St Searles 24, Mansion St.
Murray Leitch, 20, of 54 Mansion St., Kitchener, is in Walkerton Hospital with two broken legs and severe scalp lacerations.
Lost Control of Car
The fatality victim apparently lost control of the 1948 model car on the wet pavement driving north on the Elora Rd. toward Paisley. The machine crashed into a large elm tree 10 miles north of Walkerton at the farm lane of Hugh Campbell, R.R. 1, Paisley.
Before hitting the tree it careened into the left ditch. Leitch was thrown clear by the impact but Searles was pinned in the wreckage. The dead man was extricated by garagemen who had to dismantle part of the car.
Dr. H. Allan, Walkerton, Bruce County health officer, passed the scene shortly after the accident and had the injured youth sent to Walkerton Hospital by ambulance.
Will Hold Inquest
Cpl. Jack Craig. Constable Hugh Rutherford and Constable George Mills of the Provincial Police investigated. Dr. T. H. Sinclair, Walkerton coroner, said an inquest would be held. Searles, on holidays, had driven his parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Searles, and sister, Audrey, to Kincardine Tuesday. They returned home that night and he left shortly after with his friend Mur- ray Leitch, who lives down the street a few houses.
Born in Kitchener
They planned to stay the remaineder of the week with Leitch's grandmother who resides in Paisley.
Born in Kitchener, Stanley Searles attended Suddaby Public School and was employed at the Greb Shoe Co., Ltd. He played softball for the Greb team. De- ceased attended St. Matthew's Lutheran Church.
Besides his parents, he is survived by a brother, Leslie, Kitchener, and a sister, Audrey at home.
The body is at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home where funeral service will be held Monday at 3:30 p.m., with Rev. L. H. Schaus officiating in the absence of the pastor, Rev. Dr. John Schmieder. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery.
