________________________________
The church at Markham mourns. A dear sister is gone from our midst. Sister Mary Wismer, wife of Deacon David Wismer, died sudddenly at her home on Monday evening, July 16, 1883. She had been about her household duties during the day, apparently in her usual health, and in the evening retired to rest at the usual hour. Shortly after, however, she aroused her husband, who called in their son and daughter-in-law living in another part of the house, just in time to hear her say goodbye, and then behold her peacefully close her eyes in death. Sister Wismer was one of the oldest members of the Markham Church. She was born in Bucks County , Pennsylvania, August 13, 1810; consequently at the time of her death was nearly 73 years of age. Her maiden name was Mary Toman. When about 14 years old she, with her parents and others, came to Canada, driving all the way with a train of sixteen wagons and teams, carrying their provisions, and sleeping in their wagons at night. She first came to Waterloo, thence in a few months to Markham, where she continued to reside until the time of her death. In the year 1826 she was married to David Wismer, with whom she lived a peaceful and happy life. Of their fourteen children (six sons and eight daughters) ten survive, and all except one - who with her husband was absent in Florida - attended her funeral. Early in life she was converted under the labors of Elder James Spooney, and with her husband was baptized and united with the Markham Christian Church, which was then a branch of the Bloomington Church. Amid all the trials through which the church has since passed she remained a consistent member, living a holy and exemplary life. When others faltered she was confiding; when they fled she stood firm, attending to the means of grace to the last. We believe she was faithful unto death, and now sweetly sleeps in Jesus, awaiting the day of the Lord's appearing, when, true to his promise, he will give her a crown of life. Her funeral was attended by a large circle of relatives, friends, and neighbors, all feeling they had lost a friend; sorrowing, yet not as those who have no hope, but able to look forward with joy to the hour when the Lord shall number his jewels and gather his weary people to himself, where
"Those who meet shall part no more, And those long parted meet again."
As a wife Sister Wismer was affectionate and true, and the bereaved husband has our deep sympathy in his hours of loneliness and grief. As a mother she was gentle and kind, and her admonitions and example will long be remembered by her sorrowing children. As a neighbor she was faithful and obliging, and will not soon be forgotten. Funeral sermon by the writer, from II Timothy 4: 6-82
