He was born in Bealheim, Saxony, Germany. He emigrated to Canada in 1846, and settling in the timber after much hard labor cleared 100 acres of land. He livee there 20 years and then came to Iowa, settling in Mills county and from there seven years later he came to Montgomery county, where he died.

For 28 years he was a preacher of the gospel in the Mennonite church a denomination of the members of which have distinquished themselves by the simplicity of their habits and the honesty of all their dealings. He had lived strictly up the teachings of his church, while loyalty to Christ was the ruling motive of his life. In sickness and health, in prospertity and in adversity, the Almighty hand of his divine Friend was his guide and his strenght. He passed from earth with perfect trust in the Saviour whom he had so long loved and served. he left eight children to mourn his loss. He lost his wife eight years aog. He was buried November 30. He serviced were conducted at the home and at the church by Rev. R. E. Roberts, pastor of the Congregational church at Wales, who preached an impressive sermon at the sorrowing congregation from Psa.
