- Car Driven By D. Ruby Struck Aged Resident
On Sunday evening about seven o'clock Mrs. David Rudy, aged 72, Tavistock, and widow of the late David Rudy, well known former auctioneer of this district was almost instantly killed when struck by an automobile driven by Daniel Ruby of East Zorra. The accident took place on Hope street east opposite the gateway to her son's residence. With her daughter, Mrs. A. M. Miller, and Mr. Miller she had spent the day with her sister, Mrs. James Facey of Blandford and was returning home.
Mrs. Rudy was seated in the front seat of the car with Mr. Miller and when opposite her son's residence she alighted from the car and was proceeding to cross the street when she was struck by a light coupe coming from a side street and turning the corner a short distance from where the fatality occurred driven by Ruby. She was thrown to the pavement and sustained a fracture at the base of the skull.
Drs. Taylor and Cawthorpe were soon on the scene and she was carried into her son's residence when she soon succumbed to the injuries.
The driver of the car declared the accident was unavoidable and witnesses who saw him going down Hope street just prior to the accident say he was going at a moderate rate of speed. It is thought that coming from behind the car Ruby's vision of the woman was cut off. Ruby is a one-armed driver.
Chief of Police, Schippling was notified and he in turn notified Dr. Green of Woodstock, the coroner. A jury was empaneled and the inquest will take place on Friday evening. The following is the jury, Robert Walter, Thomas Milson, Samuel Zehr, W. Straham, Adam Fuhr, Andrew McKay, James V. Field, Theodore Wettlaufer and Henry Schmidt.
Mrs. Rudy was a native of the Township of East Zorra where she spent the greater part of her life. She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Woods, pioneer resident of Zorra. In the year 1876 she was united in marriage to David Rudy after which they moved to the farm of Lot 33, concession 16, East Zorra, where she resided until she moved to Tavistock twenty-seven years ago. Her husband predeceased her by fourteen years. She was a beloved member of Knox United Church, Tavistock, and was held in the highest of esteem throughout the locality and her sudden taking has caused widespread sorrow and regret.
There are left in bereavement two sons, Josiah, of Tavistock, with whom she resided and Daniel, of East Zorra, and two daughters, Mrs. A. S. Miller, Tavistock, and Mrs. Edward Stock of East Zorra. Surviving also are two brothers, J. G. Woods, East Zorra. and Robert Woods, Galt, and one sister, Mrs. James Facey, of Blandford. and fourteen grandchildren.
The funeral was held on Thursday afternoon at 2.30 p.m. at Knox Church, Tavistock .
