  • Notes
    • Arthur Israel was born in Winterbourne on July 26, 1914 to Oscar Israel and Maude (Westfall) Israel. Arthur took his high school entrance examinations in 1928 at Elmira Public School and finished with honours, allowing him admission into a collegiate institute, high school or continuation school. Arthur attended high school but did not finish.

Finding it difficult to get a job without a high school education Arthur attended Euler Business College in 1930 for accounting. Upon graduation, Arthur got a job with the railroad in Preston for sixty dollars a month. Business was bad and Arthur was let go from the railroad a year later. For awhile, Arthur worked on a farm for $100 a year. Realising that this was not enough money to start a family, Arthur and his fiancée, Hilda Lavina Reist purchased a 25 hectare farm in 1934 for $3600. On the farm he grew wheat and made an extra $5 a week with his father slaughtering animals as a butcher. Arthur and Hilda also made money selling strawberries door-to-door in Kitchener. Arthur also took a second job as a construction director when they were building new roads in the county.

Arthur and Hilda continued to farm for 18 years. They owned the Bonnie Muir farm and Gordon Farm in Winterbourne until 1952 when they sold to G. F. Higgins and built a new house in Conestogo. The house was built on a lot purchased from Oscar Huehn.

Arthur and Hilda wed in June 1935 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Elmira where they were parishioners. The bride was attended by her sister, Flora Reist and Edward Israel, brother of the bridegroom was the best man. Rev. A. Orzen presided over the marriage. The newly weds spent their honeymoon in Niagara Falls. Arthur and Hilda had one child together, Arlene (Israel) Koch.

Arthur was appointed Clerk of the Township of Woolwich at a council meeting held on March 6, 1951. He was the only written application. The position carried a salary of $750. Arthur assumed the treasurer's duties the following year when no one applied for the open position. In 1953, he continued to take on extra duties and became the tax collector and welfare officer. As an experienced minute recorder, Arthur was secretary of the Township of Woolwich planning board and committee of adjustments. Arthur resigned from the position of Clerk-Treasurer on July 1, 1970 after 19 years of service. He was presented with a lawn umbrella, table and chairs, arm chair, rocking chair, coffee table, luggage and wrist watch. At this time, the St. Jacobs Lions Club also recognized Arthur with a plaque for his service to the community.

Arthur did not stay in retirement for long and was appointed census commissioner for Woolwich district in April 1971. The census district included 12 areas in Woolwich, 6 in Elmira and 1 in Peel. Each area had 200 households.

Arthur was awarded a Centennial medal by the government of Canada on July 1, 1967. He was recommended for the award by Township of Woolwich council. Around 20,000 medals were awarded as a commemoration of the centennial year. They were awarded for public services on the recommendation of municipal councils and other bodies. Arthur and Mabel Ziegler, a teacher of 38 years were the two nominees put forth by the Township of Woolwich who were awarded the Centennial medal.

Arthur died on February 16, 2009 at A. R. Goudie Eventide Nursing Home, Kitchener in his 95th year. His wife, Hilda passed away in 2001 after 65 years of marriage.
