      Death Of Katherine Morton

Conducted Grocery and Dry Goods Business in Air for Number of Years

The death of still another of Ayr's older residents occurred on Sunday at the home of Mrs. Mary McCrow, Keg Lane, near Paris, in the person of Katherine Morton, in her 79th year. Miss Morton had been in ill health for about one year, and had been staying at the home of Mrs. McCrow for some three weeks. Miss Morton was born on the Morton homestead, just east of the village, being a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Morton. As a young lady, she acted as a clerk in the general store of the late William Baker, and later had charge of the ladies' wear department of the late C. H. Gerbig's general store. Miss Morton then went into the merchandising business on her own account, conducting a grocery and dry goods store for several years in the stand on Stanley street now being used as a war salvage room. She subsequently removed to the store now occupied by E. C. Krantz. She finally sold the business, in 1913, to W. A. Upton, after which she clerked for some years for the John White Company, Woodstock. Miss Morton was possessed of a friendly, genial disposition and was highly esteemed by a host of friends. She was a valued member of Knox United Church. Surviving are two brothers, Robert Morton, Ayr, and James Morton, Glenmorris. The funeral took place this (Wednesday) afternoon from her late residence, Hall street, interment being made in Ayr Cemetery.
