Notes |
- Death of Mr. Thos. Stewart
The old friends of this gentleman in Galt and surrounding Townships will regret to learn of his death, which took place at Port Elgin on Tuesday. We mentioned in our last issue that Mr. Stewart was very seriously ill but it was supposed even then that he might linger on for months. The progress of his disease was more rapid than anticipated, however, and he sank to his eternal rest on Tuesday. The deceased was in Galt on Wednesday, 2nd November, consulting Dr. Sylvester, and by his advice went to Toronto, where the opinion that his disease was cancer of the liver was confirmed.
Mr. Stewart was a native of Ayrshire, Scotland, and emigrated when a young man. He first went to Nova Scotia, where he worked for about two years or more. He then started for Upper Canada, landing in Dundas in the year 1846. He here worked for Gartshore for a short time; but being desirous of pushing still farther west he came on to Galt the next year. Shortly after coming to the then village he was engaged to take charge of Bowman's mill at Blair, where he remained for some years. He purchased Fisher's mill, Waterloo township, about the year 1853, and carried it on with considerable success until he purchased the Dumfries mill in Galt in the year 1864. He was more than successful in his management of this mill, his prosperity inducing him to branch out and purchase the Doon mill and property. This was the turning point with Mr. Stewart. He struggled hard, but the load was to great; and eventually he lost everything. He left Galt in 1874, and since that time has been in charge of mills at Alton, Ayr, Brussels and Port Elgin. He also went out to California, but after a short stay in that country returned to Ontario. At the time of his death he was joint owner with his brother of the Port Elgin mill. In 1854 Mr. Stewart was united in marriage to Miss Margaret McAinsh, of Waterloo, who still survives him. There were no children from the union. Mr. Stewart was in the 70th year of his age at the time of his death.
The funeral of the deceased will take place in Galt today (Friday) on arrival of the 11:00 morning train at the old G. W. station. From there the remains will be taken to Mount View cemetery.

_______________
The township's sixth flour mill in 1871, owned by Thomas Stewart and operated by Jacob Z. Detweiler at Doon, was a shadow of its former substantial size. This was the millsite bought from John Biehn in 1834 by the Montreal and Hamilton merchants Adam Ferrie & Co., who built a massive dam with flour, oatmeal and barley mills and a sawmill and a distillery. In 1851, six men operated the flour, oat and barley mills; by 1871, only two men were employed in milling $15,000 worth ol flour. The whole Doon Mills estate had been sold by auction lor the Bank ol Commerce in late October 1869. Mr George Patterson of Galt bought the mill property itself-the grist, oatmeal and barley mills and the store-for $10,000, and the Ferrie homestead with nine acres for $1,540
