- Norman William Meldrum born in Badenoch, Wellington Co., Ontario. He attended schools in Stratford (High School) and the Toronto Normal School. He taught school himself for a time, afterwhich he studied medicine and graduated from the Toronto School of Medcine in 1873, he received the Starr Gold Medal.
He first advertised in the Dumfries Reformer in 1874 as a Doctor.

Practising in Ayr for almost 40 years until a stroke in 1914 retired him. He was an invalid until 1925 whe he died on October 23, 1925. In the early part of his life he was active in sports, particually tennis and later in life was a lawn bowler. He attended Knox Presbyterian Church and was a talented musician.

MELDRUM, REV. William (d.), was b. in Scot., 1806. He was a graduate of Aberdeen University. In 1839 he emigrated from Inverness, Scot., to Canada, coming to Puslinch in response to a call to minister to the Presbyterian church, which had just been established, he being the first resident Presbyterian minister in the township of Puslinch. There had been 100 acres reserved for church and school purposes on which a small log church had been built. Soon after Mr. Meldrum came to Puslinch, he purchased the right of a squatter to 100 acres of land on lot 33, con. 8, and there set. The late Mr. Meldrum was a man of strong personality, as well as being very zealous and active. These qualities made him not only an important factor in the establishment of the Presbyterian church in Puslinch but also in the secular affaires of the pioneer settlement. In 1845 he m. Ann McLean, dau. of Peter McLean. Mr. Meldrum remained in Puslinch until 1852, when he received a call to Vaughan, York Co., where he remained five years. He then became the Presbyterian minister in West Zorra, where he remained until 1871, when he retired to Morriston, and in 1879 moved to his homestead near that village. He d. in 1889, at the ripe age of 83 years. His widow survives him, and lives at Morriston. Issue: Dr. Norman W., graduate of Toronto University, medical branch, who is now practising at Ayr, Ont.; Mrs. (Rev.) James Stewart, Dr. Peter G., also graduate of the Toronto University, medical branch, and Edinburgh, and practising at Whitby, Ont.; Mrs. Alex Marshall, Mich.; Miss Anna P., in Toronto; Dr. John A., Belmont, Ont.; Mrs. C. A. Lemen, in Detroit; George J., Elizabeth, and Alexander D., B.A., barrister in Sudbury.
George J., m. Gertrude, dau. of Robert Watt, of Kincardine. Issue: Anna G. and Elma L. He owns the Meldrum homestead in Puslinch, known as "Melbank, " which contains 100 acres, and on which he resides, He also owns 100 acres in the Gore of Puslinch, lot 33. In politics he is a Liberal, and has always taken an active interest in political matters, and has been President of the Township Liberal Association. He was Councillor four years, and elected Reeve of Puslinch Tp. in 1905, which he later resigned, and was appointed Township Clerk. He is also Secretary of the Puslinch Agr. Society.

Dr. Meldrum Passes - Was Prominent Resident of Ayr for Fifty-one Years - Dr. Norman W. Meldrum, a resident of Ayr for the past fifty-one years, passed away here on Friday night, in his 79th year, after an lingering illness. For a period of 40 years he was one of the most prominent and successful physicians of the district, being well and favorably known by a host of friends. He was stricken with a paralytic stroke 11 years ago, from the effects of which he never recovered, and until the time of his death was confined to his room. Deceased was born in Badenoch, Wellington County, in 1847 and was of Highland Scotch parentage, being the eldest son of the Rev. William and Anne McLean Meldrum. Upon graduating from the Stratford Grammar school, he entered the Toronto Normal school. During his teaching career he married Joan Sutherland of West Zorra, who predeceased him by nine years. About 1870 he returned to Toronto to study medicine at the Toronto Medical School and won the distinction and highest honors that could then be attained by graduating as a Starr gold medalist. In 1874 the doctor opened a medical practice in Ayr and during the 40 years he practiced here, he came in contact with all classes of people, creating a wide circle of friends who will greatly mourn the loss of one of Ayr's most respected citizens. He was a great lover of children and took an interest in all educational matters, being school trustee for many years. He was a member of Knox Presbyterian church and up to the time of his illness, took great interest in church affairs. …?... he was an active member of the Masonic order, and as …?... He was also an …?... and the older residence will remember the entertainment he helped to provide along this line, in cooperation with Rev. Dr. Thomson, and members of the Reid and Baxter families. He is survived by one son and two daughters: Dr. William N. of Norwich, Mrs. W. F. Anderson, and Miss Alice at home; also seven grandchildren. He also leaves to mourn their loss, three brothers and two sisters: Fr. John A. of Weston, George J. of Guelph, Alex. D. of Parry Sound, Miss Anna P. of Toronto and Miss Elizabeth M. of Saskatoon. The funeral took place from his late residence, Northumberland Street to the Ayr Cemetery on Monday afternoon. The service was conducted by Rev. J. W. Currie. The following gentlemen acted as pallbearers: Messrs. John Goldie, A. R. Robertson, W. A. Ramsay, John Q. Reid, J. W. Henderson, Robert Cuthbertson, A. L. Easton and James Lovett.
