Notes |
- Once can scarcely conceive of the modern travelling facilities, disappointing as they may, in this rapid age, sometimes, be, without thinking of the days of the stage coach. To-day the fine railroad coaches, proof against wind and weather and conducted by obliging officials, carry passengers and mail twice daily towards the Grand Truck and C.P.R. [Canadian Pacific Railway] main roads, while formerly - only a dozen years ago - the only regular means of reaching a railway was by stage coach travelling daily a distance of ten miles and return. Waterloo was then the nearest point of connection with the G.T.R. Rain or shine, cold or warm, the Elmira stage, after having previously gathered the mail and conveyed passengers to and from Floradale, Yatton and Glenallan, left Elmira each morning and returned each night. For many years, few days, indeed, passed, on which the familiar figure of Mr. Henry Steuernagel, the veteran stage-driver, might not be seen on the front seat, on very busy days on the dash-board, of the old stage coach. His duties were exacting and the orders he carried in his memory were many. Mr. Steuernagel is one of the oldest residents of Elmira, residing here since 1855.

The grim reaper has held harvest in our village and has called away three of our oldest citizens, viz Mr. Hy. Steuernagel, Mr. Ludwig Stumpf,
and Mrs. Hy. Hahn. The former was, perhaps, as widely known in this district as any of our inhabitants having emi-grated to America, from Hesse Darmstadt, in 1851, and locating here in 1853 when Elmira consisted of but a few log houses clustered around a cross-road He was of a genial disposition and soon gained friends. In 1865 he was married to Gertrude Maurer who proved to be a true help meet and who now survives him. For many years he had charge of the Glenallan. Elmira and Waterloo stage discharging his duties faithfully and frequently inconvieniencing himself for the comfort of his passengers. It was not an unusual occurrence to see him perched on the dashboard of his stage coach when the interior was filled with passengers. A number of years ago he met with an accident which incapacitated him for his usual occupation. Though of hearty a robust constitution, his health had gradually failed until his friends realized that it could be only a matter of time when the final call would Tuesday morning when come. he arose from his bed he was seized with heart failure and expired almost immediately. He leaves a widow and four children, viz: Lydia. Mrs. Thos. O'- Connor, Haysland, Geo. of Ann Harbor, Mich., Wm. of Elmira; and Mary, Mrs. Wm. McDanald of Hamilton. Of late deceased has been a faithful member of St. Pauls Lutheran church, the pastor of which, Rev. Graupner will conduct the funeral ser- vices which are to be held on Friday afternoon, at 2 o'clock.
