  • Notes
    • Mrs. Fergus Anderson Passes

A native of Ayr and one of its much-loved residents, Mrs. W. Fergus Anderson passed away in the K-W Hospital on Tuesday, Aug. 7, in her 88th year. Although in failing health, she had been confined to hospital only since the previous Friday. The former Anna Margaret Meldrum, she was a daughter of the late Dr. Norman Meldrum and his wife, Joan Sutherland, both prominent citizens in Ayr's early days. She graduated from Normal School after completing her education here and subsequently taught at Roseville, the White School and Embro. She was married in 1904 to W. Fergus Anderson, an Ayr native son. They moved immediately to Winnipeg, where Mr. Anderson was chief clerk with the Canadian Northern Railway. A family of five was born in this city. In 1919 they moved to Toronto at the time of the amalgamation of the Canadian Northern and Grand Trunk into the GNR system. Mr. Anderson was made auditor of freight receipts for the entire system. When he retired in 1924 the family returned to Ayr. Mr. Anderson passed away in 1935 and Mrs. Anderson remained here in the large home on Northumberland St., which was formerly owned by her parents and bore the distinctive name "Melbrae". Mrs. Anderson was a member of Knox Church here and was very active in its work. She was a life member of the WMS (now the UCW) and evinced her deep interest in the children of the congregation by serving for many years as superintendent of the Cradle Roll. Mrs. Anderson was proud of her Scottish ancestry and retained a deep interest in Scottish tradition and lore throughout her life. In early years she studied Scottish dancing under Professor Moon and proved her skill by winning a number of medals. In later life she imparted her knowledge of Highland dancing and music to many of the younger folk of the community. Mrs. Anderson never missed the annual Highland games at Embro until failing health prevented her attendance. Mrs. Anderson, whom several generations recall as having "one of the kindest faces and gentlest smiles," was popular in all social circles and took a deep interest in community affairs. She approached them all with an attitude of calmness and serenity which few persons are fortunate enough to possess. She will be deeply missed by all in the community. Surviving are four sons and a daughter: William, Norman and James of Toronto; Walter of Ottawa and Mrs. J. A. W. Bell (Alice) of Guelph. Nine grandchildren also survive.

      The Funeral

Funeral service was held on Thursday at Little's Funeral Home, Galt, conducted by Rev. H. A. Bagnall of Dublin St., United Church, Guelph (in the absence of Rev. W. J. V. Buchanan). Interment was made in the Ayr Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Dr. G. E. D. Wilson, Robert E. Lovett, N. H. Bennett and G. S. Dalrymple, all of Ayr; Richard Baxter, RR 3, Bright, and Walter I. Reid, Galt.
