  • Notes
    • Paul Gishler, FCIC, one of Canada's leading industrial scientists, passed away in Edmonton, in 1992. He was born in 1904 in Golden Lake, ON. He received his early education in Ontario, then entered the Calgary normal school. Following graduation in 1923, he taught school in rural Alberta. Paul later entered the University of Alberta, graduating with a BSc in 1929 and an MSc in 1931 in physical chemistry. He obtained his PhD in physical chemistry at McGill University in 1935. Gishler's first job was teaching at the Alberta College of Art and Technology. In 1937 Dr. Gishler joined the National Research Council (NRC) in Ottawa and spent the next 18 years there. In 1955 he joined Chemcell Ltd in Edmonton. He retired in 1969 and undertook a number of consulting activities until 1979. He married Dorothy Riley of Calgary in 1940. They spent many, happy hours together hiking through their beloved Rocky Mountains. They travelled both the David Thompson Highway and the Yellowhead Highway west of Jasper when they were still dirt trails. Dorothy predeceased Paul in 1990. Gishler is survived by two sons and three grandchildren. All those who knew Paul were enriched by his friendship: we are all the poorer for his passing. The sympathy of all members of the Institute is extended to his family.
