• Notes

  The third death referred to was that of Mr. Jacob Bender, who died about noon on Monday. Deceased was born in Michelsteid, Baden Germany, and came to this country in his youth with his parents to whom he proved an efficient help in his old age, he being their only son. He had been troubled for a long time with his stomach and for a couple of weeks he could take no food at all. On examination after death it was found that the passage leading to the stomach was almost closed up and above the restricted part an aperture caused probably by violent vomiting. Deceased lived about 30 years on a farm in Upper Woolwich now owned by his son in law, Mr. Andrew Schmidt. About 12 years ago he moved to Elmira where he first wife died, and he was married again to Mrs. Kaiser, who survives him together with two daughters, Mrs. Schmidt and Mrs. Levi Yost. He was a very quiet and peaceful citizen and a good neighbor and a consistent member of the Evangelical denomination. He was buried in Upper Woolwich, having reached the age of 64 years, 8 months and 19 days. The ranks of the Old Woolwich pioneers have been greatly thinned within the last 10 years and soon they will all be laid to rest, and it is but fitting that the present generation, which owes so much to them and their labors, should hold them grateful and loving remembrance.
