• Notes

  Three sources tell us that "Mary" was the name of Robert Gooding's wife: daughter Elizabeth's marriage in 1863, daughter Christina's marriage in 1867 and daughter Almira's marriage in 1870. The death of daughter Elizabeth in 1922 names her mother as "Elizabeth A." and the death of son James in 1907 is the sole source for his mother's surname which was "Fleet". We'll say then that her maiden name was perhaps Mary Elizabeth Fleet. Mary appears in the 1851 census with the rest of her family, age 31 and living in Otonabee, Peterborough County. Ten years later in the 1861 census, the family has moved to Woolwich Township, Waterloo County and father Robert is a widower. Mary passed away between the two census, possibly while they were still living in Peterborough County but maybe after the move to Waterloo County. The memorial for the wife of Robert S.
