Farmer, merchant.
Born at Banffshire, Scotland on 23 July 1867, son of John Mitchell and Ann Forbes, the family emigrated to Canada in 1873, settling in Waterloo Country, Ontario. He attended local schools until the age of 16 when he returned to work on the farm. In 1891 he went to Manitoba and worked in the milling business for ten years. He moved to Birtle in 1902 and bought an interest in a hardware store. On 30 March 1904, he married Evelina Laidman. They had a daughter, Evelyn Mitchell. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church.
