    • James Matthias Baldwin (1857-?)

      Bank manager. Born in Oxford County, Ontario on 29 June 1857, he left school at 13 and went to work in a general store at Bright and, later, at Dundas. In 1879, he came to Manitoba and located first at Manitou then, in 1882, farmed for eight years near Pelican Lake. In 1891 he moved to Killarney and was appointed clerk and treasurer for the Rural Municipality of Turtle Mountain, and deputy county clerk. He later resigned the latter position to go into partnership with George Lawrence in an agricultural implements business. The partnership ended in 1898 when Baldwin opened a private bank which later became a branch of the Union Bank of Canada, and of which he was appointed manager. In 1879, he married Diana Greene of Waterloo County, Ontario. They had two children: Edwin N. Baldwin and William H. Baldwin. He was a member of the AF & AM and IOOF .
