- JOHN DENNIS (JACK) PLAYFORD 1921 - 2009 With sadness we announce the sudden passing of our father, Jack, at his home in Waterloo, on Thursday, March 19, 2009. Cherished husband for 65 years of Molly, who predeceased him by less than 6 months. Loving father of Penny and her husband David of Sturgeon Falls, James and his wife Trudie of Waterloo and David of Kitchener. He was the dear grandad of Chris, Lisa, Jeffrey and Michael and great-grandad of Jamie. He is survived by his brother, Peter and was predeceased by his parents, Belle (Kinzie) and Elias Playford and his brother, Don. Jack was a proud air force veteran, serving during the Second World War as a Lancaster pilot with the RAF 100 Squadron. He was a charter member of the RCAFA Wing 404, and recently received a 60 year membership pin. He was one of the original partners of Imperial Plywoods Limited, where he worked until retirement. Jack greatly enjoyed life and had a large circle of friends with whom he golfed, fished, curled, played bridge and just socialized. He was a long-time member of the Westmount Golf and Country Club and of Knox Presbyterian Church. Jack also gave back to his community as a volunteer. Three years ago, he received an Award of Distinction for 25 years of service with Meals on Wheels, citing him as a volunteer "Whose compassion and sense of humour bring a smile to his clients, other volunteers and staff". Friends are invited to share their memories of Jack with his family during memorial visitation at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home , 171 King St. S., Waterloo, on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The memorial service to celebrate Jack's life will be held in the chapel of the funeral home on Friday, March 27, 2009 at 1 p.m., the Revs. Brooke and Linda Ashfield officiating. Reception to follow. Private family interment in Mount Hope Cemetery, Waterloo at a later date. Words of comfort for the family and donations to Knox Presbyterian Church or a charity of choice may be arranged through the funeral home, www.erbgood.com or 519-745-8445. In living memory of Jack a donation will be made to the Trees for Learning Program by the funeral home.
