Notes |
- Hugh Goudie, "All the Goudies of this county are descendants of Hugh Goudie who was born near Edinburgh, Scotland, January 12th, 1792. He was married to Jane Ayer about the year 1815. On May 28th, 1816 was born their eldest son, David, who came to Canada with his parents in 1828. They settled where now is situated the city of Guelph. Soon after Mr. and Mrs. Goudie's arrival in Canada, young David had to make use of the "axe" and "plow" instead of the "books" and "slates" as boys now-a-days do. He was engaged with Jacob Schneider of Bloomingdale for three and a half years. From here he went to Henry Sniders, thence to old Peter Erb. From here he went to Mr. Vance's, near Hespeler, thence to Groh's. After leaving Waterloo County he went to Cayuga where he resided for a short time, then again returned to Waterloo County where he has since resided. At present they reside about two miles south of Breslau, on the west side of the Preston Road. Mr. Goudie is quite an active and intelligent man yet, considering his age and great amount of labor he has performed since his boyhood days. He possesses all those sterling qualities which have made the name of "Scotchman" synonymous with business integrity, sterling honesty, successful in all undertakings, lovers of law and order, and, best of all, worshippers of the true and living God. On June 17th, 1841, he was married to Sarah Fathers who was born October 16th, 1822, and died at Cayuga, Ontario, August 28th, 1842, leaving one daughter named Emily who was born May 18th, 1842. She is married to Samuel Wanner, a farmer. They reside in Colbourne Township, Huron County, and have a family of two sons named David and George. After the decease of Mrs. Goudie he was again married, December 18th, 1843, to Nancy, daughter of Tobias and Catharine (Stricker) Wanner. She was born February 27th, 1825. To Mr. Goudie and his second wife was born a family of ten children"
