Goudie, Samuel (1866-1951)
Samuel Goudie (11 August 1866-2 July 1951) was a minister and leader of the United Missionary Church (now Evangelical Missionary Church). Born in Waterloo County, near Hespeler, ON, he was the son of David and Nancy Goudie. On 20 March 1889, he married Eliza J. Smith. Converted at the age of 17, he joined the church in 1885, preached his first sermon that fall, and was ordained by the Ontario conference in 1891.
Goudie gave 54 years of active service to the church. He spent 26 years in pastoral work at Port Elgin, Maryboro, Vineland, Kitchener (Bethany), Toronto (Bethel), and Toronto (Jones Ave.). For 28 years he served as a district superintendent (1905-33). He served well, not only his own conference, but also the church as a whole. For 17 years (1922-39) he was president of the United Missionary Society, and for 31 years (1912-43) was chairman of the executive board. A member of eight general conferences, he was chairman of the 1912 general conference at Bethlehem, Pa. Goudie retired from the active work in 1940 and took up residence in Stouffville, PA. He died 2 July l951.
