Notes |
- MISS MAUD A. BETTS One of Kingston's best known women passed away in the Kingston General Hospital on Wednesday in the person of Maud A. Betts, youngest daughter of the late Dr. H. A. Betts, formerly of "Calderwood." Miss Betts underwent an operation in the General Hospital about five weeks ago, but this failed to restore her to health. The late Miss Betts had lived in Kingston since she was a child and had long been associated with St. James' Anglican Church, where her generosity was pronounced. She interested herself deeply in any undertaking of the church and her liberality manifested itself on many occasions. It is recalled that in a contest some time ago Miss Betts was awarded a very fine piano, which she promptly turned over to St. James' Sunday School, then in need of one. In addition to her church charities, Miss Betts was generous to a degree in her giving in many individual cases. Her work of assisting others, however, was carried on quietly and without show of any kind although she accomplished tremendous good. Deceased was an accomplished lady and was particularly adept in painting. She was an ardent curler and it was said of her that she was the superior of many of the men skips at the curling rink and she won many curling prizes. She was also a keen follower of croquet and considered an expert player. She was a member of the Horticultural Society and took a great interest in her garden and was also an active member of the Kingston branch of the S.P.C.A. Miss Betts was of quiet nature, but possessed a personality that endeared her to the hearts of those who knew her. She was the last surviving member of a family of ten children. The funeral will be held on Friday afternoon to St. James' Church and thence to Cataraqui Cemetery. Funeral service will be conducted at the residence, 140 Beverley Street at two o'clock and the service in the church will be held at two-thirty o'clock. Rev. J. D. Mackenzie Naughton of St. James' Church will officiate.
