BETTS, HENRY AUGUSTUS was the subject of a biographical article. in "The Province of Ontario-A History," by J. E. Middleton and Fred Landon, which says, in part:

Dr. Henry Augustus Betts, son of John Betts (of Wortham, Suffolk) was born in Birmingham….He received his education at St. James Old School, of Rugby, and afterwards became a pupil of the celebrated Sir Astley Cooper. His medical education was finished at Guy's Hospital, London. Dr. Betts was chief house surgeon of the Birmingham Hospital for many years, and afterwards practised his profession at Edgbaston and Stourbridge. He was a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons. Among his noteworthy patients were the Earl of Littleton, the Earl of Stamford and Warrington, and the late Right Honorable William E. Gladstone. . . .
Dr. Betts came to Canada in 1856 and located in Galt. . . .

With antecedents like this, one might anticipate an illustrious career; instead there is barely any mention in the local press.

Lovell's Directory of 1857 does not include his name in Galt, and the Canada Gazette dates his licence on October 17, 1857. His first card appeared in the Galt Reporter on April 8, 1859. It indicated his qualifications and locates his residence next to Mr. Tassies, Wellington St. Galt.

The 1861 census gives his age as 51, and lists ten children.

An advertisement in the Dumfries Reformer August 6, 1862 offers "To Let or for sale, the Dwelling House lately occupied by Dr. Betts."

He moved to Montreal, and on inheriting money from his father's estate, retired to Kingston. He died there on June 26, 1877, aged 67, no mention being made of his surviving family. One son predeceased him when he was lost at sea in the sinking of the steamboat "Vicksburg" while on his way to England to further his studies in the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons.

      ____________

      DEATH OF DR. BETTS.

We regret to hear of the death of Dr. Betts last evening after a short illness at his residence Calderwood near Portsmouth. The Doctor was ever ready to use his medical skill for the relief of the poor of the neighbourhood, and his hand was ever open to relieve their necessities. The loss of a young and promising son on the Vicksburg about a year ago had a very depressing influence on the deceased, who never ceased to mourn his loss. The Doctor has left a wife with three sons and six daughters, all grown up however, to mourn his loss.

      __________

BURIAL. The remains of the late Dr. Betts were interred this afternoon. The hearse was dispensed with and the coffin carried on a black open waggon, drawn by four horses. A large attendance of friends attested to the respect in which the deceased gentleman was held.

      __________

      WRONGLY INFORMED.-
We are sorry we were misled, and in last evening's issue announced the burial of the remains of Dr. Betts as having taken place yesterday afternoon, whereas it did not take place until this morning. We were led into error by acting on the information of another, who was evidently mistaken, and led us astray, but was perfectly innocence of what he was doing.
