  • Notes
    • Daughter of Griffeth Hughes

The first of these Welsh families was that of Griffith Hughes, with his wife and three children, Helen, Hugh and Mary, who sailed from Liverpool on the 3rd of April, 1831, on the ship 'Milton' bound for New York. From there they came by the Hudson river and Erie Canal to Buffalo; crossed the Niagara river to Fort Erie, and got a conveyance to take them to old Niagara. An employee in the tavern at which they stopped overheard Mr. and Mrs. Hughes talking to each other in Welsh and spoke to them. They had been discussing how they could get to Little York, now Toronto, intending to go to Hamilton from there, but their friend told them that was out of their way and directed them to a brother of his - an Ebenezer Evans- living in Hamilton. From Hamilton the father walked (about fifty miles) to King Reeve's place, when Mr. Reynolds soon found means to fetch the mother and her family to their new home. Two yoke of oxen brought the wagon from Sexton's to Tom Robinson's, and he came to meet them, bringing a pail of water, with bread and cheese. The Hughes family moved into a house near King Reeve's place, on the Lepard farm, and lived there until 1838, when they all returned to Wales. In 1841, the son, Hugh Hughes, came back again, followed in 1842 by his parents and sisters.
