- About Jane Calder
The original family tree states that Jane married John Campbell and moved North to work on the railroad. This information was provided by an elderly member of the family when the original family tree was compiled in the early 1980`s. Jane`s sister Catherine remains MIA and I often wonder if she was the one who married this John and went `North to work on the railroad`.
As noted in the marriages of sons Alexander Jacob Campbell and James Campbell, Jane Calder was married to William Campbell.
William, age 31, b. Ontario; Jane, age 26, b. Scotland; James b. 1846, Ontario; William b. 1849, Ontario are listed in the 1851 Census for Blenheim. William`s occupation is Teacher. This occupation is also listed on his death registration in 1870 Haldimand.
Also listed in the 1851 for Blenheim as a member of the family is George Campbell, age 19, born Ontario. George is also listed as a teacher, perhaps brother to William.
Jane is listed in the 1881 for Oneida, Haldimand as a widow. Listed with her is David Campbell b. 1864 and Alexander Campbell b. 1866. In the next household is her niece, Janet Forsyth and her Cranston family; next to them her nephew James Forsyth and niece Margaret MacDonald (first-cousin marriage).
Jane is next found in the 1891 Census for Hagersville, Haldimand as a domestic in the household of George Fowler. This George is the father of Annie Marie Fowler who married Jane`s grandnephew, George Cranston.
In the 1901 for Onedia, Jane is listed as `Head` and George Fowler (above) as a lodger.
