- The Hilliard House was built in 1880 for Thomas Hilliard, publisher and editor of the Waterloo Chronicle.
The two-storey yellow brick home is an attractive interpretation of the Victorian style. The hip roof, heavy ornamental brackets under the eaves, stained glass windows, projecting bays and porches are all features which distinguish the architectural style from its plain Georgian predecessors. Thomas Hilliard is also remembered for his association with the Dominion Life Assurance Company, the Waterloo Horticultural Society, the Board of Education and many years of dedicated church service in the Methodist Church (now First United Church) which earned him great respect among his peers. All facades are recognized for its historical and architectural significance for this designation.1a
