ST. PETER'S PASTOR GONE TO HIS REST

Rev. R. von Pirch Died on Sunday at Cullman, Alabama

WAS PASTOR HERE ABOUT 24 YEARS
      .

When the bells at St. Peter's tolled on Sunday evening, the thought uppermost in the minds of those who heard the dirge was-ls Mr. von Pirch 'dead?

And that was the sad messages they announced. The news spread rapidly over the town. The pastor of St. Peter's was at the prime of his life and usefulness, before illness, and figured so prominently in town affairs, that the community was startled by the news of his death, though knowing he was suffering from, an Incurable disease -consumption.

The death of few of our citizens would have evoked greater comment and regret.

Although be served the principles for which he stood, as effectively perhaps, as any other man, there is little that can be charged against his memory in the way of unfairness or uncharitableness.

His death is a great loss to the congregation of St. Peter's church. In life he was regarded with affection by thousands and with respect by many more. To all who knew him, his memory will be that of a, purposeful, public-spirited man, loyal to his friends and generous and tolerant to those who differed from him on questions of principle.

A telegram to Mr. Geo. E. Potter, received between six and seven o'clock on Sunday evening, announced he death at 12.30 p. m. at Cullman, Alabama, of Rev. R. von Pirch. The message was from Mr. Charles Oberlander, a brother of Mrs. George Potter, who stopped off at Cullman on his way home from Cuba, to visit his sister. He went to inquire about Mr. von Pirch and learned that he had passed away. It is three weeks ago today since Mr. and Mrs. von Pirch and daughter Louise left Berlin for the South in the hope that the change would benefit his health. Two weeks ago today they reached Cullman, after an enforced stop over at Cincinnati, Ohio, owing to this illness. On his immediate arrival at Cullman, Mr. von Pinch's condition was somewhat more encouring [sic], but it was only temporary.

A wire today to Mr. Frederick Bornhold, of the Trustee Board of St. Peter's Church, from Mrs. von Pirch intimated that the remains will be brought to Berlin as soon as, possible.

Mr. von Pirch's health has been on the decline for six or seven months past. Though ill, he discharged as long as possible the duties of preacher and pastor until October of last year. Then he was compelled to relinquish the work, and since that time his pulpit has been occupied by Rev. A. Oberlander, and his son, Rev. F. E. Oberlander. Mr. von Pirch was still the pastor and recently was granted six months leave of absence.

The late Reinhold von Pirch was, born in Prussia, Germany, his father being a nobleman. His mother, who is over 80 years of age is still living. He has no near relatives in this country. He studied for fifteen years in the best schools and universities of Germany, and when a young man came to America. He remained for a brief period in Florida , and from there ,went to Philadelphia. He attended the Lutheran Seminary in the Quaker city and took the clerbyman's [sic] orders there.

For a number of years he was pastor of the Lutheran church in Toronto. During that time he was also an examiner in German at the Toronto University.

Born in October, 1856, he was 26 years of age when he came to Berlin as pastor of St. Peter's. That was in 1882, on April 1st and for almost 23 years he has had charge of the congregation. Under his pas…
