- ELOPEMENT.
A Newly Married Man Runs Away With a Widow
The following account of an elopement from Goldstone, Wellington County, Ontario, is from the Guelph Herald of October 31st.
Mrs. Mary Scott, relict of James Scott, formerly or Linwood, a widow, fair, fat, and forty, had, for two years, been receiving advances from John Barkwell, a farmer near this village, the avowed object of such attention a being matrimony. John had, on his bended knees, and with his right hand on his vest watch pocket, promised to marry his Mary, but on account of the opposition of his friends the union was indefinitely deferred. But be asked her to become his house-keeper, which she did. The avowed object of this maneuver was that his friends would cease their opposition to the marriage. Mary kept house for John all summer, and things seemed to be going on with all the smoothness possible.
In the latter part of August Mary went to Linwood to visit her friends, and the perfidous lover, taking advantage of her temporary absence, fled himself down to Garafraxa, where a slight girl of seventeen, who had formerly been his housekeeper, resided. John fogot he was forty-two years old, and that the slight young lady was only seventeen, and he up and married her, …
But Mary didn't give up the ship thus easily. She followed him perseveringly night and day, the great love of her great woman's heart-carrying her on in the furtherance of her object. The grand result of Mary's determination, perseverance and love for John, was this: On Saturday morning, 20th Instant, John and Mary packed their Sartogas; be bade a tender adieu to his young wife, his seven children, his fine farm, which is well stocked and clear of debt; she folded her four children to her bosom for the last time, and they were
Off on the morning train-
This eloping train.
Never, never, never, never,
Never to come bask again
Detroit, Michigan, was the destination of the runway pair, and on arriving there John wrote to his father, to say that he had left for good but gave not the reason why. He is probably at Detroit still, enjoying the society of the remarkable woman who seduced him into the fatal step, which will blight the happiness of both for a lifetime.
John Barkwell was a prominent church member, and had, through his conduct and deportment, won the respect and confidence of his brethren in the church. He was much respected by his neighbors, and his rash act has thrown a large circle of friends into the deepest distress.
