    • Emanuel Merner Of Sebringville Passes

The death occurred at Stratford General Hospital on Wednesday evening, May 6, of Mr. Emanuel Merner, a prominent and esteemed resident of the village of Sebringville and a native of the New Hamburg district. Mr. Merner was taken seriously ill last week and was rushed to the Stratford Hospital on Tuesday where he passed away.

The deceased was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Christian Merner of New Hamburg. He was born on the Merner homestead just outside the western limits of the village on September 18th, 1858 and was in his 84th year.

As a young man he went to Zurich and in partnership with his cousin, Jonathan J. Merner, conducted a general store business for a few years. Leaving Zurich he settled in Sebringville over fifty years ago and farmed successfully for many years, retiring in 1904.

The late Mr. Merner was a faithful member of Emmanuel Evangelical Church in Sebringville and an ardent church worker. He was secretary of the Sunday School for 50 years, an elder and trustee and a member of the finance board and was treasurer of the church at the time of his death. During his long residence in Sebringville, Mr. Merner made many special contributions to his church to which he was greatly attached and untiring in his work for the welfare of the church.

On June 27, 1888, the late Mr. Merner was married to Maryann Kastner of Sebringville, who is left in bereavement besides one daughter, Mrs. Winnifred Brittin, and two sons, Chester K. and Donovan A. Merner. He is also survived by three brothers, Edward, George and Rev. Henry Merner, all of New Hamburg, and two sisters, Mrs. D. A. Zurbrigg, Philadelphia, Pa., and Mrs. John Zinn, Kitchener, and ten grandchildren.

The funeral will be held on Saturday afternoon with a private service at the house at two o'clock, followed by a public service at Emmanuel Evangelical Church, Sebringville. Interment will follow in the Sebringville Cemetery. Rev. H. Leibold will be in charge of the services.
