  John Bender John Bender of Tavistock, formerly of New Hamburg and South Easthope Township, died last Friday at the age of 91. Born Oct. 7, 1878 in Wilmot Township, he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Bender and farmed in South Easthope Township for many years before retiring and moving to New Hamburg. He came to Tavistock three months ago. Mr. Bender was a member of the East Zorra Mennonite Church 16th line. His wife, the former Magdalena Zehr predeceased him in 1955. Surviving are one son, Joseph, Shakespeare; three daughters, Mrs. Bena Kropf, New Hamburg; Mrs. David (Annie) Streicher and Mrs. John (Elizabeth) Schwartzentruber, Tavistock; three sisters, Mrs. Noah (Lena) Wagler, New Hamburg; Mrs. Christian (Katie) Lebold and Mrs. Christian (Anne) Baechler, both of Tavistock; 16 grandchildren, 48 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by one son and six brothers. Funeral service was held at the East Zorra Mennonite church, 16th line, on Monday, Rev Newton Gingerich officiating. Burial took place in the church cemetery. The Robert Krug Funeral Home, Tavistock, was in charge of arrangements. New Hamburg Independent, January 7, 1970
