Notes |
- Dr. Angus Nichol
The death occurred at Stratford on Sunday of Dr. A. Nichol, a former well known physician of New Hamburg at the age of 86 years. He had been in failing health for the past two years since when he had given up his practice and made his home in Stratford. The late Dr. Nichol was born in Pictou, Nova Scotia, where he spend his early youth. He received his medical degrees from Victoria College and Trinity Medical College, Toronto. He started his first practice in New Hamburg and resided here for many years. He removed from here about 35 years ago to Bayfield and for the past thirty years practiced his profession in Sebringville. He was married to Ruth Plum, daughter of the late Wm. Plum Sr., who survives him. Their only daughter, Katie, predeceased him quite a number of years ago. The deceased was a devout member of the Anglican church and well liked and respected during his many years service as a medical practitioner The funeral was held on Tuesday with interment in Avondale Cemetery.

NICHOL, ANGUS was born on April 15, 1844 near Pictou, Nova Scotia, and came as an infant with his parents to Perth County. He was educated at the public school of Stratford, until he obtained his first class teacher's certificate. He taught for about six years, during that time also serving as a volunteer in the First Western Battalion, Stratford Rifles.
He attended Victoria College receiving his medical degree in 1872, as silver medallist. There are a number of conflicting reports regarding the moves he made during his medical career. He first practised either in Haysville or Stratford - his marriage in December 1877 is the only reference to Haysville until 1883 when the Dumfries Reformer noted that he had left Haysville to settle in Bayfield. There he was Medical Officer of Health, and served as a member of the School Board.
The Volksblatt of December 11, 1889 announced that he had settled in New Hamburg, but this report was premature. Under the heading "A New Doctor'. the following notice appeared on September 17, 1890:
Dr. Angus Nichol, who formerly lived in Haysville, and latterly in Bayfield, Ont. has bought Dr. Schmidt's practice, and will be buying a residence here, as we are informed that he will stay and make his permanent residence here. His office is at the same place which Dr. Schmidt used in the Independent Block.
The next move was noted by the Dumfries Reformer of April 9, 1896 which said that he had sold his practice to Dr. C. B. Stammers, of Toronto, and that he intended to leave for Montreal. On July 30, that year, the Weekly Record said he was going to Millbank, and on September 17. that he was on a visit to New Hamburg, referring to him as Dr. Nichol of Newton. By 1900 the Volksblatt placed him in Sebringville, and this is where he remained for some years, until at least 1922. From the end of 1910 to the end of 1916 he does not appear to have been in practice, but from 1917 until 1928 he paid his fees to the College of Physicians and Surgeons, and presumably had returned to his practice.
He moved to Stratford because of ill health, probably in 1929, having retired as Medical Officer of Health the year before. He died there on April 7, 1930 at the age of 85. He was survived by his widow.
One account said that he did a good deal of literary work, was noted as a poet, and was "quite a naturalist". The Canadian Medical Association Journal said he was "A splendid type of the old country practitioner. . . a man of many interests."
