    • Xavier Boehler founded the New Hamburg Pottery and settled in Canada around 1848. By 1851 he lived in New Hamburg where he was a potter. By 1854 his pottery was found on a map on the east side of Peel Street. He had a brother Valentine who lived in Egmondville, Ontario.

      New Hamburg....Among the early Catholic inhabitants were: Joseph Hartmann, from Sparenberg, Bavaria, a butcher and tavernkeeper who came in 1847; Sylvester Frank, a brewer, was certainly here in 1842, possibly some years earlier (Sanderl's register); Xavier Boehler, a potter from Alsace.

      Xavier had a apprentice named Henry Schuler 1842-1908 and learned the pottery trade from Xavier Boehler in New Hamburg. By 1868, Henry had opened a pottery in Paris with Peter McGlade but the partnership dissolved in 1873. Henry continued his own pottery, the Paris Stoneware Works, until it was destroyed in an 1884 flood.
