- Former Local Resident Slain In New Orleans
A former New Hamburg resident, William Adair Dale, was stabbed to death while spending a Christmas vacation in the southern United States. His body was found in a New Orleans motel room. He had been stabbed 16 times.
Mr. Dale was a son of the late Rev. E. G. Dale, who was pastor of New Hamburg Baptist Church about 30 years ago. He was born in Delhi and grew up at New Hamburg and Guelph where his father had pastorates. After graduating from the University of Toronto and the University of California taught languages. He had taught In Australia for several years, returning in 1961. More recently, he had taught Latin and Greek at the University of Victoria In Toronto. He was 42 years of age.
The victim had spent Christmas at the home of his sister, Mrs. Donald (Clara Margaret) Stratford, at Oakland, near Brantford. The following day he left for a southern vacation in company with a friend, and had planned to return January.
In company with his friend, a teacher from Sudbury, he had motored to New Orleans. The body of the victim was found when the friend telephoned to arrange a meeting after they separated Thursday morning. The motel manager went to the room following the call, and getting no response, found the door unlocked, and discovered the body on the floor.
Investigating detectives found no personal papers or identification, Dale's wallet was reported missing.
Surviving besides his sister, is a brother, Donald, of London, and his mother, Mrs. Earle Dale, Beamsville.
The body was returned for a funeral service at Toronto Wednesday morning, and burial was to follow in Mount Hope Cemetery, Brantford.
