Notes |
- In the Gay Nineties, when everyone else seemed to be doing it, a lot of the young bloods of the Village got the notion it was high time they too got dressed up; and aided and abetted by John Albert Beattie who furnished the cloth and the accessories and Herman Liersch who made the clothes, a lot of them got themselves fitted out with frock coats, nice trousers, patent leather shoes, silk shirts, hats, nice canes, collars, neckties and gloves. The attendance at the churches increased, the number of strollers on our streets of a fine Sunday afternoon was perhaps then at its peak for Hespeler. And they looked fine!
It so happened that many of these young chaps had been customers of Ed. Roos (hired a lot of rigs from him) and so when he was leaving, Ed. invited them to make up a party sometime and come to St. George to pay him a visit. It came Spring and a date was set while there was still good sleighing and about a dozen of them crawled into the Pleasure sleigh and away they went to St. George to see Ed; dolled up in all their finery. What a sight that must have been for the Natives of that lovely little Village that Sabbath afternoon, to see so many silk hats passing by along their street.
What a boost it must have given Ed! Boy, that was really something.
