- Oscar H. Vogt, Manufacturer And Noted Citizen, Is Dead
President of Great West Felt Company Failed to Recover After Operation in St. Joseph's Hospital, Guelph; born in Elmira, He Directed Big Industry Here For 17 Years
Oscar Vogt is dead.
Grimly battling to the end, conscious and with a word of farewell for his loved ones on his lips, Oscar H. Vogt, Elmira's most outstanding citizen and one of the most prominent business executives of Waterloo County, succumbed to a comparatively brief illness about 9: 15 this (Thursday) morning in St. Joseph's Hospital, Guelph.
The late Mr. Vogt was aged 68 years, 10 months and 23 days and death followed an operation he underwent just before midnight Wednesday evening, decided upon by his medical men to an almost forlorn effort to save his life.
Conscious to the End
The late Mr. Vogt had been slightly unwell for about a week previous to Saturday when his condition became worse. Dr. W. D. S. Cross was summoned and on Monday held consultation with Dr. H. O. Howitt, of Guelph. Tuesday there was no improvement and Dr. Young, of Toronto, was called in. With the complaint more definitely diagnosed, his removal to hospital at Guelph was decided upon. He was taken there Tuesday night and it was planned to operate Thursday morning. Dr. W. P. Cavin, of Toronto, was called in consultation. Throughout Wednesday he gradually grew weaker and his suffering became more intense. Although appearing almost hopeless the doctors decided upon an immediate operation. He entered the operating room at 11: 30 pm. At 6 O'clock this morning he recovered from the anaesthetic and rallied slightly. He was quite conscious and recognized those about his bedside.
With him during his last moments were his wife and two sisters, Mrs. George Ruppel, of Elmira, and Mrs. C. K. Jansen and the latter's husband, of Galt. Although very weak he smiled feebly and apparently knowing the end was near bade each farewell.
Town Is Shocked
Death came at 9: 15 o'clock.
Word of his untimely demise was immediately telephoned to Elmira, where a host of friends and relatives awaited anxiously, known of his condition. A gloom was cast over the town when the sad tidings were received. The office and plant of the Great West Felt Company was closed down in respect to the late president and will remain closed until Monday.
The late Mr. Vogt was born in Elmira, on June 5, 1868, the youngest son of the late Mr. and Mrs. George Vogt. He received his education and spent his early life in Elmira, and later entered the employ of Shurley and Dietrich, of Galt, and for 25 years represented this company on the road. In 1910, upon representations being made to him, he organized the Great West Felt Company and became its president. For 17 years he occupied this position jointly with that of manager and the great industry of which Elmira is so proud, stands today as a monument to this ability.
Had Many Interests
While the felt company occupied his main attention he had numerous other interests. Just recently he was named vice-president of the reorganized Elmira Creamery Company, Limited. He was director of the Waterloo Trust and Savings Company, and of the Dumart Packing Company, of Kitchener.
While he never stood for public office he always took a deep interest in municipal and political questions and throughout his long residence was identified with many public activities. He was a member of the Chamber of Commerce, and a keen lover of flowers, he took an active part in the work of the Horticultural Society, of which he was a member. He was past president of the Curling and Bowling clubs for some years, and also honorary president of the Elmira Amateur Athletic Association and a director of the Elmira Musical Society. A conservative in politics, he was vice-president of the North Waterloo Conservative Association. A Presbyterian in religion he as a member of Gale Presbyterian Church. He was a Mason and Odd Fellow.
Married in 1925
Mr. Vogt was married to Miss Edith Behrens, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Behrens, Elmira, on July 14, 1925.
The death of Mr. Vogt makes the fifth loss in the Vogt family within three years. Frederick Vogt, a brother, died September 14, 1924, in Mishawaka, Ind. On June 28, Mrs. Marianne Vogt, his mother, died in her 95th year. Dr. Augustus S. Vogt famous as the founder of the Mendelssohn Choir, passed away September 17, 1925, while seven weeks later, the latter's son-in-law, Dr. Patrick Hardy, of Toronto, was called.
In addition to his widow, the late Mr. Vogt is survived by four sisters, Mrs. Philip Christman, Mrs. George Ruppel, Elmira; Mrs. S. H. Eby, St. Thomas; and Mrs. C. K. Jansen, Galt.
