Notes |
- Many citizens were shocked today to learn of the sudden passing of Ald. Harold W. Gray, popular civic official and well known business man. Mr. Gray died suddenly of a heart attack just as he was leaving his home at 5 Lincoln avenue at 10 o'clock this morning. Mr. Gray was born near Ottawa and received his early education in that district. For eight years he was an embalmer for an Ottawa firm. In 1921 he came to Galt and from then until 1929 he was employed with T. Little and Son Ltd. After two years in Toronto with the firm of McDougall and Brown he returned to the city and established his own business which became known as Harold W. Gray Funeral Home. For some time his brother was in partnership with him when the business operated in Galt and Preston as Gray Brothers. In 1947 Mr. Gray sold his business which is now known as the W. R. Coutts Funeral Home. Since last August Mr. Gray has been the proprietor of the taxi business known as Gray Cabs. Mr. Gray was first elected to the city council in December, 1947. After serving as an alderman during the years 1948 and 1949 he was re-elected last December for another two-year term. He was chairman of the civic reception committee last year and at the 1950 inaugural meeting he was named chairman of the cemetery committee. Mr. Gray is resting at the W. R. Coutts Funeral Home, 96 St. Andrews street. Funeral service will be held from there on Saturday at 2 p.m. with interment in Mount View cemetery.
