Notes |
- Demise of Miss Rose Anna McKnight - In the death of Miss Rose Anna McKnight, which occurred on Thursday, June 5, at the home of a relative, Mrs. Smith, Hespeler Road, North Dumfries, whither she had gone on May 24th, Ayr loses one of its oldest, best known and most highly esteemed residents. The deceased, who had been in failing health for some time, was in her 75th year. She was born in Beverly, but had lived practically all her life in Ayr. She was a woman of keen intelligence and led an upright, Godly life. For many years she was a member of Stanley Street Presbyterian Church, but latterly attended the Methodist Church. In middle life she was prominent in church affairs, filling various offices with ability and marked fidelity. In literary circles she also filled an unique sphere, especially as a reader of Irish prose or poetry, her lineage and brogue rendering such selections very effective. Many friends, especially those of her own generation, will deeply regret the passing of a good and true hearted neighbor - a woman who despised small gossip and who sought to do all the good she could . Many sorrowing friends met at the cemetery here on Saturday afternoon to participate in the last sad rites as the departed one's remains were laid to rest until the judgment day. The service at the house was conducted by Rev. K. J. Macdonald of Galt, while Rev. R. E Railton of Ayr officiated at the grave. The pallbearers were Messrs. James Richardson, James Gow, Jno. Anderson, Wm Nicoll, F. E. Robinson and Jno. Cochrane.
