________________________________
72 Years In And About Ayr
There passed away last week (May 11), after a brief illness of 48 hours, one of the vary oldest residents of Ayr and vicinity in the person of Mr. George Matheson at the ripe age of 72 years, all or nearly all of which long period was spent in the village or its neighborhood, he having been born in the adjoining township of North Dumfries. Under these circumstances it will be readily imagined that the deceased experienced some of the hardships incident to pioneer life, and was one of the land marks of the section. A man of strong character and marked individually, he was not only respected in the community but enjoyed the esteem of a wide circle of staunch personal friends, all of whom deeply regret his sudden demise.
In the year 1858 he married Miss Annie Murray, who predeceased him by nine years. The fruits of the union were ten children, nine of whom survive. They are Mrs. Benj. Crittenden and Mrs. Rodgers of Elk Horn, Man.; Joan of Bax Axe, Mich.; Mrs. Charles Reeb of Port Colborne; David of Poughkeepsie, N.Y.; Edith at Wingham, and Elizabeth, Georgia and Alexander at home. Deceased was one of a family of thirteen, four of whom are still living, as follows: Miss Kate and William Matheson, Ayr; Mrs. Thos. Henderson, Brantford, and Walter at Twas, Mich.
A stone mason by trade Mr. Matheson was esteemed a good mechanic and monuments of his handiwork are to be met wit an every hand throughout the entire community. Of him it has been truly said that he preferred to lose money rather than slight a job entrusted to his hands.
The funeral on Saturday afternoon was very largely attended, the services at the house being conducted by Revs. S. O. Nixon and John Thomson. The pall bearers were all old friends of the family, viz.: Messrs. John A. Reid, J. R. Folsetter, W. I. Reid, Alex Rennie, A. J. Reid and George Cress. Among the relatives from a distance who attended the obsequies were John W. Matheson of Bax Axe, Mich.; Mr. and Mrs. Reeb of Port Colborne, Mrs. Thos. Henderson of Brantford and Miss Edith Matheson of Wingham. The floral tributes were numerous and beautiful, including one from the staff of the Wingham Public school in which Miss Matheson is a teacher, a fact which led an observer to remark that "a touch of kind makes all the world kin."
