Notes |
- James Thomas Bell Dies - One of Ayr's oldest citizens was called by death on Saturday morning in the person of James Thomas Bell, aged 81, who passed away at his residence, Northumberland Street, after an illness of five months duration.
The late Mr. Bell was born in Galt, a son of the late William and Magdelena Bell; he came to Ayr in 1902 and was employed at the grain elevator of the late Michael Robson, now the Ayr District Co-operative, for some time. He obtained employment with the Canadian Pacific Railway where he was in charge of making culvert tiles at the gravel pit north of the village. Later, he was made supervisor of a crew, installing the culverts and eventually became foreman of a bridge and building gang. He was superannuated from the railway in 1936 after more than 30 years' service.
An enthusiastic follower of curling in Ayr, Mr. Bell was for many years a member of the Ayr Curling Club, and in honor of his lengthy membership was accorded a life membership. He was an adherent of Knox United Church and a valued member of both the Dolman Lodge, I.O.O.F., and the Ayr Masonic Lodge.
He is survived by two brothers, Alex and William, both of Galt, and one sister, Mrs. Charles Conochie, of Hamilton. His wife, the former Jane Taylor, predeceased him 29 years ago. He was also predeceased by three brothers, Richard, John and Walter.
The Funeral
A joint Masonic and Odd Fellow service was held at the W.O. Ball Funeral Parlor on Sunday evening with some 30 members of both lodges in attendance. J.D. Patterson, acting as chaplain, assisted by R.L. Anderson, conducted the solemn ceremony.
The funeral was held form the W.O. Ball funeral Parlor on Monday afternoon, with interment in Ayr Cemetery. Rev. W.D. Goodger, pastor of Knox United Church, was in charge of the service. The pallbearers were: George Edgar, Percy Barnett, John Deeton, John T. Kay, James Gemmell and Walter Deeton.
