  • Notes
    • THOMAS MITCHELL, farmer, Township of South Dumfries, was born in North Dumfries Township, 12th April, 1840, and is the son of John and Sarah Mitchell, the former of whom has been a farmer all his days, and a native of Ayr, Scotland, having been born there, 12th August, 1811. He is still among the living, and resides on the farm he took up in the year of the Rebellion (1837). His wife, Sarah, was also born in Scotland in 1806. They emigrated to Canada - the father in 1834, and the mother in 1836 and were married in Galt, Waterloo County. Thomas Mitchell, our subject, was united in marriage, 26th December, 1865, with Jennie Torrance, a native of Wigtonshire, Scotland. She was born 7th Dec., 1843, and is a daughter of Thomas Torrance, who came to Canada in 1850, and was drowned in the Grand River, in March 1852. Mr. and Mrs. Mitchell are members of the Presbyterian church, and have found in their lifetime that fortune's smile has fovoured them. When Mr. M., who received a good general and mathematical education, first entered the arena of farm life, he purchased 85 acres of improved land, the buildings on which were all put on after coming into his possession. He and his sister Ellen are the only two living representatives of his father's name.
