- Barnett, Gilbert Vernon - Aged 77, of Kitchener, passed away, at his home, Sunday, Nov. 22, 1998, at 7: 30 a.m., he was surrounded by his family, as he ended his courageous struggle with cancer. Beloved husband of Ruth (Hinton) Barnett for 58 years; dear father of Janice and husband Bob Currie, Jim Barnett and his wife Heather, Penny and husband Terry Rothwell, Cathy and husband Patrick Olinski and Wendy and husband Lee Weiner. Vern was also very proud of his 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren who will all miss him dearly. Vern is survived by a sister, Hedwig Howlett of Detroit and a brother, Douglas Barnett and his wife Mary of Waterloo. Vern was predeceased by his parents, Emil and Louisa; brothers, Louis and Otto and sisters, Ruth and Elsie. Vern was an employee of Zehrs Markets for over 25 years and was Vice president of Human Resources. During the Second World War, Vern saw action in the North Atlantic while serving with the Canadian Navy. He was involved in the local music community for over 60 years, including many years with the Kitchener Musical Society Band and as the leader of several versions of the Vern Barnett Dance Band. Vern was also involved with United Way fund raising and Legal Aid in the K-W area. The family wishes to extend their profound gratitude to Dr. Donna Ward, Dr. John Mutrie and Dr. Ron Pace for their understanding, care and professional courtesy and to nurse Donna Martignago and all the other nurses for their compassion and loving care given to our family. At Vern's request, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home, 621 King St. W., Kitchener on Thursday, Nov. 26, 1998 at 7 p.m. Reception will follow in the Ratz-Bechtel Family Centre. In lieu of flowers, donations for a pain pump in Vern's name will be accepted. Further information regarding donations will be available at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home the evening of the memorial or by phone after that day. Vern will be sorely missed by everyone who knew and loved him.
