    • LAWRENCE, JOHN was born in Aberdeen, Scotland, on April 14, 1813, He attended the university there, and completed his medical education in London, graduating in 1832, He then sailed as ship's surgeon on a trading voyage to South America and Australia, He returned in three years and established a practice at Wick, in the north of Scotland, He practised there for about ten years, following which he came to Canada, He settled at first at St, Andrews, on the Ottawa river, and obtained his licence in May, 1845.

In 1847 upon the outbreak of ship fever in Montreal, he was appointed medical superintendent of immigrants in that area. When the epidemic was over, in 1848, he moved to Galt. In 1853 he settled permanently in Paris, There were probably rumors of his impending move as the following notice appeared in the Galt Reporter, July, 1852,

Dr. John Lawrence Begs to intimate that he intends

      REMAINING IN GALT

Where he will continue to Practice all the Branches of his Profession as usual, and hopes, by unremitting attention, to merit a continuance of former favours.

      N. B. Dr. L. notifies all parties having ACCOUNTS &c, overdue, that they will be put in SUIT without further Notice unless IMMEDIATE PAYMENT is made. Galt 1st. January 1852

In Paris he became a prominent member of the community, and in 1875 was elected Mayor by acclamation. On May 4th. of that year, after an illness of about two months, he died. He was survived by his wife, his third, five daughters and three sons.

The Galt Reformer, referring to his stay in Galt said of him:

The Doctor was at one time a prominent resident of Galt, and won many friends by the genuine kindness of his disposition, as well as by his many other good qualities.

      ______________

      DR. JOHN LAWRENCE,
Mayor of Paris, and District Deputy Grand Master of Odd Fellows for this district, died at his residence in that town on Tuesday last at 2 o'clock in the afternoon. He was in his sixty second year, and had been a resident of Paris nearly a quarter of a century. He stood high in his profession, and was greatly esteemed by all who knew him. He was a zealous member of the fraternity of Odd Follows, and to his exertious was mainly due the organization and success of Grand River Lodge, No. 91, of that town, which secured a charter some two years ago. His loss will be deeply felt by his relatives and friends, as well as by his brother Odd-Fellows generally. The members of the Order here meet to-night to arrange for paying their departed brother a last and befitting tribute of respect, by attending his funeral to-morrow afternoon in full force. A special train leaves the Grand Trunk depot at one o'clock and will arrive sufficiently early to allow the friends from Brantford ample time to join in the cortege.
