  Accused in New Year's Eve stabbing death remanded in custody KITCHENER The two teens charged with second-degree murder in the death of a 60-year-old Kitchener man were remanded in custody Saturday. The brief court appearance took place via video link to a court in London. Their next court appearance will be in Kitchener on Monday. The teens, 18 and 16, can't be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. The 18-year-old was 17 when the attack occurred. John Luis Ferreira and his son, Shawn, were attacked by two males on New Year's Eve while walking along the Iron Horse Trail, just minutes before midnight and steps from their homes. Both men were stabbed. John Luis Ferreira died of a single stab would to his upper chest. Shawn was stabbed in the neck and was treated and released from hospital. The teens were arrested Friday without incident, police said. They also face a charge of aggravated assault for the attack on Shawn. John will be lovingly remembered by his siblings Fernando (Margaret) of Portugal, Isaura (Manuel) of Toronto, Eulalia (Cesar) of Toronto, Victor (Lidy) of Kitchener, Stella of Cambridge, Maria Deodata (Dee Dee) of Kitchener and Gloria (Reginald) of Cambridge. John will not be forgotten by his father-in-law Jack Ribeiro of Kitchener, and his in-laws Mary (Don) of Kitchener, Jenny (Gord) of Toronto and Nelson (Helen) of Kitchener. Predeceased by his parents Estrella and Manuel Lima Ferreira and his mother-in-law Martha Ribeiro. The Ferreira Family will receive friends at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home, 621 King Street West on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Parish prayers will be recited at 7: 00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Tom Vermiglio at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, 148 Madison Ave. S. on Friday at 12: 00 noon with interment to follow at Williamsburg Cemetery. As expressions of sympathy donations to St. Mary's General Hospital Foundation or The Food Bank of Waterloo Region, would be greatly appreciated.
