Notes |
- Most regretfully we this week announce the death of our well-known townsman, Mr. Walter Jardine, which occurred at his residence on Friday morning of last week. But a week before we announced the death of his wife, and now by the removal of the father, the family in the fullest meaning of the word are indeed orphans. In his quiet, unassuming way, Mr. Jardine was a most useful citizen. With great taste as a gardener and in the cultivation of fruit, this section owes much to his energy for the introduction of many of the choicer sorts of fruits which are now to successfully cultivated. As a member of the Agricultural Society, and filling at various times the position of Director, Mr. Jardine was a great assistance, giving his time and knowledge freely at all times for the benefit of the society and his objects. Industrious and skillful at his trade, some years ago Mr. Jardine accumulated a very nice property; but his desire to visit his old home in Scotland, where he believed he could do as well as here, caused him to dispose of it, and taking all his family he crossed the ocean and settled for nearly a year in his old town in Scotland. It did not take long to show him that he had made a serious error, and as soon as possible, he disposed of his property there and again came back to Galt, where he has since carried on a daily growing business. Mr. Jardine had hosts of friends who will miss his ever genial presence and real kind heartedness, and will long bear his untimely death most regretfully in their memories.
